In a reef tank, lighting is not a finishing touch. Most corals rely on light for their energy, so your light directly affects their health, color and growth. Choosing it well matters.

What Corals Actually Need From Light
Before comparing brands, understand two ideas.
PAR is a measure of the usable light reaching your corals. Different corals want different PAR levels. As covered in our guide on soft, LPS and SPS corals, soft corals and many LPS do well at moderate PAR, while SPS corals need considerably more.
Spectrum is the mix of colors in the light. Reef lighting leans heavily blue, both because corals use that part of the spectrum and because it makes their colors pop.
A good reef light delivers the right PAR across your whole tank, with a spectrum your corals can use. Coverage matters as much as raw power.
AI (AquaIllumination)
AI fixtures are compact, powerful and a long-standing favorite among reef keepers, particularly those keeping SPS. They pack high output into a small unit and offer detailed control over spectrum and intensity.
That power and control suit keepers who want to fine-tune their tank and push demanding corals. For a smaller SPS-focused tank, an AI fixture delivers a lot of capability in a tidy package.
Kessil
Kessil lights are known for two things: a beautiful, natural shimmer and genuinely simple controls. Many reefers love the way Kessil light moves across a tank, much like sunlight through water.
Kessil’s point-source design produces that signature shimmer, and the brand keeps the user experience refreshingly straightforward. It is a strong choice for keepers who want excellent results without a steep configuration learning curve.
Current USA
Current USA fixtures are valued for broad, even coverage and strong value. They tend to spread light well across a tank, which makes them a practical choice for wider builds and mixed reefs.
For a keeper who wants reliable, even lighting over softs and LPS at a sensible price, Current USA is well worth a look. It is a dependable, good-value path into proper reef lighting.
Matching Light to Coral and Tank Size
The honest answer to “which brand is best” is that it depends on your tank.
If you are running soft corals and LPS, any of the three will serve you well; coverage and value may steer you toward Current USA or Kessil. If you are keeping demanding SPS, you want the higher output and control that AI is known for. Tank size and shape matter too: a long tank needs a light, or several, that cover its full length without dim spots.
There is no universal winner. There is a best fit for your corals, your tank dimensions and your budget.
