A Sarasota Fish Store Built on Honesty
Gulf Coast Aquatics opened in 2019 with one goal: be the specialty aquarium store Sarasota hobbyists actually deserve. Healthy fish, real expertise, and advice you can trust.
Why we opened the shop
Before Gulf Coast Aquatics existed, founder Marcus Chen spent years managing aquarium departments inside big-box retailers. He saw the same problems over and over: fish that arrived stressed and unquarantined, staff who could not answer a basic care question, and customers sold species that would never get along.
Sarasota hobbyists deserved better. So in 2019, Marcus opened an independent specialty store on Bee Ridge Road, with a freshwater tropical fish section, a dedicated saltwater and coral room, and a full equipment aisle. The shop now keeps 120+ aquariums on display.
How we do things differently
Every fish we sell is quarantined for a full two weeks, so disease gets caught early instead of going home with you. Our staff keep fish at home themselves, which means the advice you get is real experience, not a script. And we give honest fish-compatibility advice even when it means selling you less.
We do not sell livestock online and we do not offer recurring tank maintenance. We are an in-store shop that wants to see your tank succeed, and free water testing is always part of that.
Three Things We Never Compromise
Health first, always
Every fish is quarantined for two full weeks. Disease gets caught and treated before any fish reaches you.
Honest over easy
We will talk you out of a bad purchase. A thriving tank brings you back; a crashed one does not.
Teach, do not upsell
We explain the why behind every recommendation so you can care for your tank with confidence.
The People Behind the Tanks
Marcus Chen
Founder & Lead Aquarist
Marcus Chen founded Gulf Coast Aquatics in Sarasota in 2019, after years managing aquarium departments at big-box retailers. He has kept fish for more than 25 years, freshwater and saltwater alike, and built the shop around the three things chains kept getting wrong: healthy livestock, quality equipment and honest advice.
